ISO 17020 is the baseline standard used in the World Accreditation Forum (WA) for accrediting laboratories. ISO 17020 is also referenced by many standards, including ISO 12207, EN 45001, ISO 10012, ISO 10007 and ASME Y14.5. Note that the following are not International Standards but are simply advice on good practice based on the use of ISO 17010 or ISO 17025.

The accreditation requirements of ISO 17020: 2012 are such that the results obtained from laboratory testing/calibration by a laboratory that is fully accredited to ISO 17020: 2012 will be expected to differ from those produced by a non-accredited laboratory in one or more of the following ways: (a) in respect of reference values and/or bias; (b) in respect of precision; (c) in respect of limits of detection; and/or (d) in respect of limits of quantification.
